It is held on Wednesday of the third, the sixth or the seventh month and Wednesday of the twelfth, the first and the second . People in the Northeast believe that Phi Pu Ta is the soul of their ancestors who protect them from dangers and evils.

Every village has built a little house for Phi Pu Ta to live in. At the ceremony, villagers bring a jar of liquor, a whole chicken, other food, white flowers, candles and insence sticks as an offering to Phi Pu Ta. The villagers also ask their ancestors to bring them prosperity and keep them safe.
